TV and me

I’ve never been a big TV watcher. I prefer to read (this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.)

However, there have been some decent TV shows on lately. I adore the sci-fi channel (or SyFy as they now call themselves.) Nothing will ever come close to my beloved X-Files, but Warehouse 13, Eureka, and their new show, Haven, all come close. Haven, I think is the closest. It has an FBI agent and a local cop trying to figure out the mysterious problems that plague a small town. Plus it’s based on a Stephen King short story.

Do you need me to elaborate on my love for Stephen King books? I will. But that’s for another post.

Anyways, back to TV. My husband and I have discovered that BBC America shows reruns of Star Trek: The Next Generation every day at 8pm. We’ve kind of arranged our days around it, sad to say. After that is a cool British show called Top Gear, which involved really fast sports cars and a host who does crazy things like drive through an indoor mall.  Apparently Great Britain has more than cool car number plates – they also have sports cars that aren’t yet available over here.

I don’t just like sci fi shows. I also like Bones, House and repeats of Friends, but I still prefer to read.

Getting back in the swing of things

Yes, I realize that’s been a month since I’ve written anything. I’m slowly but surely getting back in the swing of things. I have a HUGE backlog of things that need writing, as well as new projects that are underway (more on that later.)

What have I been up to? Well, among the more important things – I turned a whopping 31 a few weeks ago. The thing that annoys me the most about my birthday (and no, it isn’t the fact that I’m getting older – that doesn’t bother me, really) is having to renew my license plates. I HATE having to go down the BMV, stand in line for fifteen minutes while 3 employees who are clearly doing nothing stare at the wall, and then give away $50 of my hard-earned dollars for a tiny sticker. I considered shelling out an extra $11 for the pretty new plates that Ohio has, but decided against it. One of these years I might go for personal number plates, something along the lines of “SMILEY” but I think that other cars may rear-end me on purpose for being too optimistic.

Anyway, I’m making it my goal to write on here every day this week, as I have a lot planned for this little blog. So Stay Tuned!

Is that a tornado?

My husband swears that a tornado touched down right outside our apartment building this afternoon while I was at work. He claims to have seen swirling rain and felt the windows “pulsating.”

According to the National Weather Service, around 3:50pm today high winds in excess of 60mph were witnessed and they were sustained for 4 minutes. It doesn’t come right out and say EF-0 tornado, but maybe at that small level it’s entirely subjective.

Either way, this tree in front of my apartment building “sister” tower was ripped to shreds…

In writing/blogging news, I’m going to add some new categories. For example, Thursday’s are now going to feature a post on one of my many organizing tips. I have yet to come up with a catchy name for the post, but I’m sure I will before tomorrow evening!

Off to Iowa….

Before tomorrow’s 12-hour journey to Iowa, here’s what (little) I’ve been working on:

I am now publishing articles through Associated Content (now owned by Yahoo) here is a link to my profile and what I’ve written there.

A quick update…

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the Earth – I’ve just been BUSY. There are plenty of updates to come, articles that need to be written, etc, so I will be posting links like crazy in the next few days. Be prepared!

In the meantime, here’s a review to keep you satisfied: Pad Thai Restaurant in Hudson, posted on AltOhio.com.

My first car

I still have the license plates from my first car. I found them in my closet this evening when I was looking for a pair of slippers for Josh. It doesn’t matter though – I know those number plates by heart.

I had a lot of fun in that little car. There was one time, when I was a senior in college, that I fit six people into it. (Picture six people in a tiny hatchback – 2 in front, 3 in the back and 1 in the trunk. It resembled a clown car!)

The furthest I ever went in it was Cincinnati, and it’s a miracle that the car made it that far – that it didn’t run right, it just didn’t have a whole lot of horsepower. It didn’t like driving up big hills or picking up speed quickly. My dad used to joke that I had to wind it up before I started it.

It lasted me all through college, and then the transmission started to falter not long after I finished college. The poor car only had 65,000 miles.

Although it pained me to get rid of it, I took advantage of the post 9/11 deals and got my current car on a no-interest-for-five-years loan.

If circumstances were different, I would still have the Ladybug. I miss that little red car.

Random thoughts

I received my car registrations renewal on Saturday. I’m tempted to upgrade to the new Beautiful Ohio plates even though they cost more. I think they’re pretty, and I’m tired of my old ones. Josh was picking on me, because every time a new style comes out I have to upgrade to it. Oh, well.

I’m going to have to dig up a picture of my old car, because all of this talk about license plates makes me think of her. Yes, my first car was a Her, and she was named The Ladybug. She was a bright, bright red Ford Aspire with a swooshy pinstripe down each side.

I  wound up with a new cat a few weekends ago. She was thrown in a dumpster by her former owners and was rescued by my husband. We wound up keeping her in the bathroom, away from the other cats for about a day, and since we didn’t find her another home during that time frame, we got attached to her. So, she’s staying. Her name is now Isis, which sounds better than Bathroom Cat (BC).

Al, my Work Pet, has started hanging around a lot more. There’s some speculation that he has lost his mate and is lonely, so he adopted us. All I know if that when he sees someone standing by the front door, he comes running over all excited. Here’s a picture of him:

Ohio Sports Journal

My new column on the Ohio Sports Journal is up and running. I am going to be covering the Cleveland Indians and Browns. Check it out here: Tribe drops second game in row.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for my Beginning Blogging column on SeededBuzz.com and my Restaurants column for AltOhio. Links to them will be posted when they’re up.

And yes, I know, I work too much!

Al, my “work pet”

Before you read the title of this post and start thinking that I’m insane, last summer there were two Canadian Geese that hung around the building that I work in. I (or one of my co-workers) would feed them daily, so they just wandered around the area. One of them even stood outside my boss’ office one day and honked at him in search of food. I named them “Al” and “Timmy.” They vanished last September, and I hadn’t seen hide nor hair of them until last week.

I have no idea if it is the same goose or not, but I’ve convinced myself that it is. After all, when I go outside to feed him, he doesn’t fly away – he actually moves closer to where I’m standing, almost like he recognizes me. It more than likely isn’t the same one, since any goose that is getting fed will move towards the source of the food, but humor me anyway.

Things that are weird

This is the weirdest picture that I have ever taken. It’s a view of a gas station in Garfield Heights. I took it from the front seat of my car with the camera on my old Motorola RAZR cell phone. (For the record, this was taken almost 4 years ago.)

I know that the National Blog Posting Month theme is “Look Up”, but if I did that, I’d be posting a lot of pictures of the Goodyear Blimp as it flies over my apartment building. This picture is “Look Out” and I think that’s close enough.
